First of May

Remember the song 'First of May' by the Bee Gees?

Well, nothing in particular actually. Just because it was the 1st May yesterday and I just thought of this song. I was listening to the song and I was thinking why 1st of May? Why not 2nd or 3rd or why not 1st June?

Is there a story behind this song that the writers (Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb) wish to tell us? I think it's a guessing game. You know how we try to guess what a writer thinks and feels through the lyrics of his songs? Well, I would like to share with you what I think.

I think song writers write what they think we feel. Of course, who cares how they feel? Who wants to know what they think? They are not important, it's us, we, you and me! The ones who buy their album, who listen to their songs! If they are able to get into us and make us listen to their songs again and again, well, they are good! How many times have you heard someone saying, "this is our first love song or this song is so meaningful it's like telling our story or this piece of music almost makes me cry"? Because you, your mind is being trapped into believing that somehow this song relates to your life in some kind of a way. And you fell for it because you felt that it is about you or about incidents happening around you!

Okay, what's the point here? Stop guessing what the song does to the writer, it doesn't matter actually? Just my thoughts, more so doesn't matter!

I'm posting the lyrics of the song here in case you want to guess what the writers of this song went through in life that inspired them to write this song.

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
We used to love while others used to play.

Dont ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.

(chorus)
Now we are tall, and christmas trees are small,
And you dont ask the time of day.

But you and i, our love will never die,

But guess who'll cry come first of may.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,

I watched the apples falling one by one.

And I recall the moment of them all,
The day I kissed your cheek and you were gone.

(chorus...)

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,

Do do do do do do do do do...

Dont ask me why, but time has passed us by,

Some one else moved in from far away.

Have you guessed it? By the way, the name of this song, 1st of May, is named after Barry's dog's birthday.

Anything to do with the song? Still want to guess? Whatever it is, I like this song!
